I set up the Science Bus experience because I want to share my enthusiasm for science with School children who have an innate passion for science learning and discovery.

For 2009 - 2010 I will be performing the 'Great Earth Show' exploring the gases in the atmosphere including CO2, Oxygen, Liquid Nitrogen and Helium . Included will also be some explanation of Earth System Science concentrating on photosynthesis, how the Earth works, electric fields and air pressure and most importantly Global Warming. All of these experiences are linked in some way to the National curriculum so for 2008 - 09 the show is aimed at KS2 and early KS3 children.

We are also running a Science Bus Club so the children can continue their learning long after the Science Bus has left your school. More information on this can be found here.

You can find out more information on how we bring the Science Bus experience to your school and what it involves by clicking here.

You can book the show by filling out the 'ask a question' section on the Book The Bus page and we will get back to you within 48 hours.

For 2009 / 2010 the Science Bus is doing the 'Great Earth Show' in which we explore the wonders of Mother Earth.

With a quiz, a pupil play and fascinating experiments the children will be talking about the Science Bus long after we have left your school.

We talk about global warming with the children and some of them will perform a play to confirm their understanding of photosynthesis and the basic science behind climate change. We believe global warming is an issue KS2 children should be well informed about!!

Please visit the 'What We Do' section to find out more information on the subjects covered, or contact us for more information or if you want to book the Science show for your school.

CO2
We look at carbon dioxide and the role it plays in the atmosphere and the making of sugar in plants. We show the children Carbon Dioxide at -78 degrees. Very visual and exciting.

Oxygen
We will make some oxygen for the children using a 'real science process. We discuss the properties of oxygen and further experiment on its role in combustion.

Electric Fields
  • Our Van der Graaf generator will amaze the children as we make the link between electricity and magnetism. Its a hair raisng experience.
Liquid Nitrogen
78% of the atmosphere is Nitrogen. We have liquid nitrogen which will absolutely amaze the children.
Sound
We learn more about sound and how it changes in different gases. We have a bell jar and a vacuum pump. Can you hear an alarm clock in a vacuum? Helium is six times lighter than air. Can you guess what happens to my voice in a gas six times heavier than air?.
Air
  • We find out if air has weight and pressure. Pressure is all around us, from the weather forecast to how aircraft fly and the children generally don't realise it. This is very visual and the children and adults will be amazed.

Find out what your weight is on other Planets (In Newtons) by downloading my Excel Calculator here.

Kieran Burns BSc (hons) set up the science bus to build on the innate enthusiasm children have for science and discovery.

Kieran is a foundation Governor of a Primary school in Bradford and is CRB checked both from this Primary school and Sheffield Hallam University.

Teachers are under pressure to deliver results, so the Science Bus was set up to build on the great work that goes on in schools day in and day out.

There has been a marked reduction in children continuing their Science Education onto A level so hopefully the Science Bus experience will spark young minds into considering science as a subject and a career. You can read a report from the Guardian newspaper here about how the shortage of scientists is impacting on the economy.

Richard Lambert of the CBI discusses how schools can promote science more effectively.

When you book the Science Bus and we come into your school we are conscious that there needs to be some follow up for the children. We have therefore set up the Science Bus Club where the children can continue their science learning long after the Science Bus has left your school. There will be help for their Science homework, video experiments on line, competitions and much much more.

You can contact us if you need to book or talk about what we have to offer your school and children. You can also visit the children's Science Bus Club to get a feel of what the Science Bus has to offer once the Science Bus has left your school.
